Ecuador congratulates Palestine for its incorporation as a State Observer in the UN

Ecuador congratulates for the adopted decision on Thursday by the General Assembly of the Organization of the United Nations of granting to Palestine the status of State Observer Not Member, with the support of 138 votes in favor compared to 9 against. The Ecuadorian Government hopes this is a step to foment a pacific, just and long lasting agreement that contributes to sow peace between Palestine and Israel, with the full establishment of recognized borders between the two states.
The change of status of Observer Entity to State Observer Not-Member, will allow Palestine to access to the assistance and coverage of the specialized agencies of the UN and to the international Courts, facilitating the diplomatic efforts to reach agreements in benefit of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
Ecuador, as co-sponsor of this resolution, considers that this decree is not a hostile action against Israel, on the contrary, is an effort of the United Nations for defending their own resolutions about this situation, human rights, international agreements for achieving the so long desired peace in that region.
The country reiterates its call, both in Palestine and Israel, to seek a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict that affects both peoples.
Ecuador was one of the 33 countries that voted in favor of the Resolution 181 of 1947 about the partition of Palestine in 2 States.
Ecuador recognized the State of Palestine with the borders of 1967, through signed letter by President Rafael Correa on December 2010.
Ecuador also supported the petition that Palestine made to the UN on September 23rd of 2011 for them to be recognized as State Member, which has not yet been accepted.
Ecuador voted in favor of the recognition of Palestine as a State Member of the UNESCO on October 31st of 2011.
The United Nations General Assembly accepted Ecuador as member of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
